How You Can Help Your Child If They Are Struggling to Read

Image
Is your child struggling to read? Don’t worry! Preschoolers learn at their own pace. It is not a major concern when your four or five-year-old child is not reading. Help them at home through interesting and fun activities. However, if your child is not able to read on their own by the time they turn six, take advice from their class teacher. Remember they will catch up with some extra help and time. Here are some ways to help your child if they are struggling to read: Use Your Child’s Strengths Your child may be good at many things. If they can draw well, draw a picture or the main character from the story. If they have great listening skills, read the story aloud to help them understand the story. This will make reading stories an interesting activity for your child. Reading Aloud Together Read aloud with your child every day. Read interesting picture books to hold their interest and use their imagination. Ask questions while reading stories to help them develop comprehension ab...

Rethinking Kindergarten at Five

Image
We just rang in the new year but it’s already time to think about next year - next school year, that is. January brings with it school tours and registration for the 2024-2025 school year. Kindergarten looks much different than when most parents attended decades ago and the old thinking that you go to Kindergarten just because you’re five no longer rings true. Nevertheless, many parents are unaware there is such a thing as the gift of a year .  So, how do you make the choice that works best for your family? There are significant benefits to offering a child the gift of a year and waiting for them to begin kindergarten when they are six. From the age of two to seven, children operate primarily from their limbic system, the control center of our emotions and dispositions. Play-based learning fosters a child’s critical thinking, emotional intelligence, perseverance through failure, and attention span. Current brain research suggests that “children who start school when they ar...

Unplug and Connect at Camp

Image
Cell phones and social media have become so interwoven in our lives that it’s tough to imagine going without them. We know it’s a common question on most campers’ minds: “Can I use my cell phone at summer camp?” Many sleepaway summer camps adopt a technology-free cell phone policy. At Camp Friendship, campers are not permitted to use personal electronics such as phones, tablets, or kindles. Staff members also do not use their devices in the presence of campers. However, we see being a tech-free camp as a liberation, not a restriction. There are so many benefits to kids being outdoors and tech-free. At camp, kids discover a world of authentic human connection, free from digital judgment and pressure. They build friendships and develop key face-to-face communication skills in the real world. They get to focus on exploring new interests and reap the health benefits of life in analog. By unplugging from phones, our campers can be present in the natural world and make genuine connecti...
